Mets Lose a Heartbreaker in World Series, eliminated by Long Island Sundevils
October 12, 2007
Phoenix, Arizona - The New Mexico Mets World Series bid ended in true heartbreak fashion in the final game of the 2008 fall classic. With a record of 2-2 going into the final game of round robin play, the Mets rallied from behind in the top of the 9th inning to take a 3-2 lead against the Sundevils. Just three outs stood before a playoff birth. It was not meant to be. The leadoff batter walked for the Sundevils, with the next hitter lining a triple to right field, which scored the leadoff batter. When the clean up hitter for Long Island came up, manager Bret Helenius gave the sign for an intentional walk. On the first pitch of the intentional walk, pitcher Bobby Campos, overthrew catcher Walter Perea and the Sundevils runner on third scored. The Mets saw their World Series come to an end.
